Penguin, How would you know?

A male and a female penguin exchange work, raising their young. The male spends four months without food standing in sub zero temperature. When at last winter comes, the antartic penguin exchanges the egg with the female, or the new hatchling one. Both still fit neatly into the male penguin's breeding pouch. Neglect here between parents, given the conditions - is defined as - being unable to exchange the egg from one parent to another, in less than 15 to 20 seconds. There are other factors. But roughly, the parents have to make sure the egg is protected at all costs. There are known instances of the male not wishing to yield the hatchling to the female. The male will walk away, chick in pouch. In these instances the female always carefully and patiently pursues the male until the male finally transfers the chick to the female and breakfast time ensues. And the male can eat for the first time since overwinter. While the males wait for the females to return, they random

Double overhead from the back

Most people who are now reading my blog ( another 100% increase from last biweekly - thank you everybody) - most of you don't know me. This isn't supposed to be about my personal life. This is a shrine to Noam Chomsky and the Goddess Kali. The goddess of dissolution of desire. And her Lover. So I am curious if any of you ever guessed what I did when I was younger. Here's a hint.: Yes that could have been me. I was a big wave surfer. Mostly tracked hurricanes and surfed them. A wave like this, you measure it from the back.(eh, brah da kine wahini h'ui o' he'e nalu bra) This wave is Triple Overhead from the Back. I've done a Double, about 2/3 the size of this one. When I paddled into the wave, it broke on a point and wrapped around the island. I remember the board. A red Barry Kan'a'pu'ani gun. Walked down onto the beach and the ground was shaking. Tornadoes had spun all the seaweed onshore into tight little balls. The ride down the fac

The story about Friday

Ok, my friday was messed up. The highlight of it was that I installed a wireless network and it went well. >:) So I am heading over to the stables afterward, and Its a nice friday evening so I'm running with the horse down the pasture and then across the road, all hell breaks loose. Sirens. Cop cars. Fire engines. Fine. So for whatever reason, I ignore this and I decide at that point, somewhere in the middle of the pasture - that the horse needs to get a bath. I am washing off the horse, on a hill by a lake where we have the ties set up - and then from across the lake I hear this unearthly wail, a woman's cry. It was both angry and sad at the same time, very unsettling. I sight through the trees - and I half-catch a view of three or four people at the edge of the lake. She sounds like she is freaking out, but not being hurt. Then, from around the corner, comes the rest of the county contingent. - I finish off the horse and set her into her stall and then I he

Eros Tense

Eros tense is the verb conjugation which refers to a combination of three tenses - past, present and future. I've thought about it since I'm getting ready to write a wikipedia article on it, and the best possible idea I can convey about this kind of a tense (which was used extensively in the bible) is that this is the present, but with recursion. So for example, you can describe the state of say, someone planting a kiss on someone. You can say "She is kissing that wolf man on his furry forehead". So Eros tense, think of it like the fractal sense (?) , will be that kiss with recursion. Lets say.. "She (is/was/willbe) kissing that wolf man on his furry forehead." Does this make sense at all? A person I know in SL that is a GT professor IRL said that it is common to find words in ancient text to be conjugated without tense, that is, the word "IS" for example simply being the only verb that exists in the finite vocabulary of the primitive

A personal request

I wanted to say a couple of things about me, personally. Right now I am in a lot of pain. Physical and otherwise. The physical stuff is manageable and won't get in the way for my Triathlon this saturday. Somehow I have developed an amazing ability to trip the circumference of a tire. Not just one lying on the ground, but around the cicumference of a bike tire propped up against the wall. I was trying to walk between the bike , and the tire, to get around to the back of the bike. I jumped. The top of my foot caught the edge of the tire and I spun around the tire and landed both knees flat on the ground. from like, three feet up. I said a few choice words. But more than anything its emotional and psychological stress that is killing me now. The audit flag went off today when I noticed that the barber had shaved off nearly all of my hair. It took me until this afternoon to even see it. Normally you notice stuff like that. Things have been weighing me down far too much. Wor

Arda and Theme

One of the great gifts of the tolkien legacy was a framework by which the tales of middle earth held together. This consistent framework was begun, in the book known as the "Silmarillion" , a book which for the author - was a point of revision and underwent several draft versions before publication. And yet it still remained as a backbone of all of the great works of Tolkien. A theme by which any land of Arda may be built upon, would of first necessity include a careful consideration of this text . Arda, which is the land before we see the lands of Middle Earth in the second and Third Age, is a world of the First Age and the most interesting of all three ages and of any land ever conceived in the canon. Several ideas present themselves to me regarding Arda, the first of which is the most intriguing - the creative aspect of the land. Things need to be built, all around. We start off with almost nothing but an idea. To conceive of such lands would by first principle mea

Ask A Lobbyist

Wonkette has posted "ask a lobbyist" today - so that if you have any questions, she's got an anonymous lobbyist, willing to answer all. If you wanted to ask a lobbyist what they do , to grease the skids.. what would it be? So, just to double up what Wonkette is trying to say please... if you have any questions at all about how things are being done in washington these days... ask her Topics - how about banning anonymous riders? What was the effort involved in killing off that? Where is all this mystery money coming from thats flowing into the democratic party right now? Are you guys just flowing more money into them ? Do you actually write laws? Do representatives depend upon you for their constituency information? How many Lobbyists does it take to screw in a light bulb. Oh wait. Thats not a question. Well ok you get the idea. Enjoy.

iPhone - Hack

One thing you notice about the iPhone is that most of the so called 'applications' are just web controls and you end up with the same web browser (safari) being the underpinning of being an application plaform. So the hack here is to load a control into a web page that kicks off into the iPhones OS the commands you want and then streams them back up as a post. In the demo, they do a DNS hack to replace the page you're trying to load, but this could be on any page that anyone could gain administrator access to. I did this once for a practical joke, took the /windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts file and edited it so that CNN looked like it was running a front page story on a friend of mine. Thats what they mean by a wireless access point controlled by a hacker. you should be careful about which one you snort, but don't worry so much about the DNS hack they have here - just be careful about any page you hit. Watch how long page loads take. If a page load takes a bit way t

Some things I've done.

Just some things I've done on the side for the past year or so. Design work, here mostly. Cumberland United Methodist Church - Website + Web application. Actually I will tweak that design a little today. Nice work, this was a requirement that we hit right, right from the first comp. We designed it to be multicultural and open. Open Minds. Open doors. A nice church. - JIC-Elco, a company that installs laboratories, cubicles and offices. Based in New Hampshire. Nice people. They're doing the work for Scientific Atlanta right now on their new setup. Took them to the driving range once. Anita La Raia - Anita, once Wine Editor for CNN, now teaches wine. Believe it or not you can learn alot about wine. I keep a bottle or two for an investment (think Chilean wines are going to go up) but its funny , I don't drink at all. And Over the years I am slowly learning about wine. Actually I take that back when I lived in Northern California I aquired a taste for wine.

I love my job

In other words, the nightmares have returned. I think I have worked my way to sanity, now all I have to do is work my way to freedom. Funny how running with your bike on your back will get you in shape. Third tire in a week. Lost one to a torn valve stem, another to a crash - this was just blew out right in the middle of the trail. I did the entire leg of the run back without stopping. I'm stoked for the saturday Tri the parks . Holding onto my keyboard... room... spinning... :b time 2 sleep.

Search for Bettie Page and... ?

Alright, now this is cool. A search for Bettie Page yields a piece, by an author who did a detailed study of christian relevance of Tolkien. Wow. That was fun. I think if Bettie Page had a myspace page, she'd have like, 90 million friends or something. Er. Tolkien would have at least five, I know that for sure. Play muffled drums and title your posts with a space character (to get that nifty lost title effect). I got my notice today from burning man and they knocked my camp down. :( Even more sad is the fact that somehow, as a result, is that I am currently humming to myself. "ding dong, the witch is dead" . For this failed camp plan approval, which was completely in accord with burning man principles, at least - I submitted a not completely to scale - layout that only showed relative positions of stations in the camp plan. It didn't have a decent leave no trace plan either - I did not discuss in detail, how waste would be dealt with + I also did not carefully outline my materials - I think an installation that you can do a zippo raid on would probably be a good idea next time. A final factor may have been that it didn't have a chill dome associated with it. After all it was the freaking desert. But the good news is that I don't care. I am still working on t

Systematic Prosody Variance (SPV)

An invented term that means listening for the rhythm of speech. One of the more interesting ways to use it is to watch how silence works; for a speech recognizer silence can be fatal. The recognizer listens for words in a context, ex. "Would you like, coffee, tea, or milk?" and the recognizer blows a fuse if you dont hit the answer in , like a natural voice rhythm of say, within 3 seconds after the question. Most recognizers carry that kind of trick to them, that if you use a natural, steady rhythm with them, they work better. A cool trick I used to use, in fact, was to turn recognition off for the first 2 seconds of a prompt. This avoids the noise relating to picking up the phone, or things going on in the room during call connection. Speech recognizers (both directed dialogue and the continuous ones) started out life with a person somewhere just grinding through stacks of stuff they had to read and someone else being very careful about how it was all recorded. Don't count your boobies until they are hatched

I was met in SL last night by someone, who happens to be the only person - whom I even faintly am familiar with in real life (RL). We met at a really cool place (my discovery of course). Wait. Strike that. It wasn't cool. It was BEAUTIFUL. It was the lair of Myradryl, one of the first denizens of SL and the first mermaid. She is a lady as true and wondrous as all of SL itself and her lair was a delight to see. Situated on the shores of the ocean, with the sound of the waves in the distance - it was just. wonderful. I love the ocean. I always have. Myradryl really did a number with this build, it is a graceful tribute to Lord Neptune. In my career, I have had some experience with spaces that were precursors to SL - in regards to the raw and steamy aspects of the metaverse - I can say that i is not true that an anarchistic society devolves into chaos in such places. No, democracy and social structure will evolve. If you are there, it will be one of the neatest thing you will ev

This is a review of a book I purchased today, that is published by vanity press. The title Sex, Love and Death (abbreviated LSD here) would cover , one would think a book about the eternal bind between the need for humanity as a species to reproduce and the curious reasons why the ineffecient and dangerous method of sex is the mechanism. That is to say, a nerdy science wonk such as myself would think of things like this first. Thats because when I see a cute girl at the bar, I think about Nash Equillibrium Points. And thats why I don't just want vodka.. I +need+ vodka. And not just a little glass of vodka. A great big double glass of vodka. With very few ice cubes. And a sparkler, please. One of the more complex issues of our time, is Palestine . Now, the fact that America can go completely over the top, like JetBlue kicking someone out of an Airport for Wearing a T Shirt - Here in Palestine, you have a people, who, if perhaps disorganized, still happily lived on the banks of Gaza and to the shore of the Mediterranean, and then, almost randomly, the state of Israel appears and begins colonizing their land. Thats the bottom line. Its not that simple, of course. Israel is a thriving economy and the Palestinians are essentially similiar to the working mexican population in the United states. The work that is done in Israel by these people amounts to a bond between the countries, that can't be broken. If the Palestinian labor were subtracted from the Jewish economy, there would be a reckoning. On the other hand, if Israeli money and work were taken away from the Palestinian economy, there would be an equally disruptive hit to the Palestinians. Half the reason

Herding Cats

I have discovered after brief success in at least finding good talent , that keeping it is much like herding cats. I cannot believe how many different personalities I have to deal with. Quite possibly the worst personality I have ever had the pleasure (?) to have dealt with was a very sharp person who currently works for USD 500.00 per month. Definitely a smart cookie. Except for the fact that, she works for 500.00 a month. I thought I could help her to train up and I could margin her bill rate and quadruple her salary or more. So, my approach was "oh you're great! when I get done with you , bla bla ba". -- it was an ++immediate turn-off++. This person exudes honesty and good heart, defiitely smart. She exudes that sort of quick wit and ability to understand a requirement - but she doesn't allow any element of human connection to develop. At one point in our discussions she told me that she had a problem with a severe sleeping disorder. It is also a rhythm

Tolkien and Origin

I have been reading as of late the tolkien books and also much of his later published work. It seems to me an overriding principle in the works that Tolkien is pursuing vivid forms and shapes that exist in the world. And not merely creating a symbolic system of language and storytelling that he felt was absent within Englands network of lore. To be sure, the stated goals and objectives of Tolkien himself were just that. He wanted to breathe life into the old stories he heard as a child. For example, he was told the story of Pussycat Mews, when he was younger. It shaped and formed some of the writings and later character work around Telvido, a tall, black Cat overlord. And other visions of cats. Moreover, it seems that in his tales he is drawing from Norse mythology, greek and egyptian themes and also Celtic language and symbology - to create a sort of alternate series of tales of middle earth for England, that we can at once read and enjoy - and also appreciate for its ability to t

The Wave

In 1969, a California High School social studies teacher began an experiment called The Wave . Note how the grammar convention I use, of hyperlinking, replaces quotation marks. "The Wave" was a social experiment that began when the Palo Alto don could not find the words or concepts to explain the rise of the third Reich. And so, he formed an experimental group with his class based on simple principles. The first, though not chronologically in the tale, is equality within the group. I say this because what is reinforced survives. Just as in SL , forever means two weeks, as the saying goes. The students are all working together for a common cause. The second is identity, and personal challenge. "Student, what was the real name of the Nazi party?" . The student must reply "Mr. Ross" as prefix. And the answer must be delivered in a straightforward tone. "Mr. Ross, The name of the Party was the German Socialist Worker's Party". T

The Hits Keep on Coming

Did a run in piedmont park today and fell hard . Took a shortcut down a hill from the playground, and jumped down onto the road just to the right of Willy's mexicana grill, about a half block in back. There is a small depression there. I flipped into the air. I turned into it in mid air and hit my left side just above the shoulder and ducked my head away from the street and it caught around my left shoulder and when my leg came down, my left leg just above the knee. It was radical . The only thing I am upset about in retrospect is that I shouted out great big "FUUCK!!" and then about three seconds later when the pain subsided enough, another choice word. I got up and the police officer was standing in back of me, arms slack and I just got up and kept running. I was listening to metallica. Heh heh heh heh. Of wolf and man. For some reason today the hits just kept on coming. My stablemate had her horse out in the ring and it bucked at her, as horses will do. And

Verona Beach/ Sycamore Grove Scenes

This is a scene clip somewhat long, from a Baz Luhrmann Film that is set in a modern day Verona beach. The fragments of the film, that work well imho are the ones that incorporate modern visual representations of the films iconography, such as a FedEx envelope that says "Post Haste" mail, the gas station sign that says "Phoenix" gas - the large corporate logos of "Montague" and "Capulet". This clip here takes from two scenes, Sycamore Grove,( where Benvolio finds his cousin and will learn his grievance or be much denied. ) Both lit in day and night. And the humble home of the Caps. The tone that Luhrmann sets throught the entire film is one of putting the camera and action into scenes that complement the general line of the story - as set with old and new together in comfortable accord. Some people do not prefer the language that is set here but for me, the language elements are a complete turn-on and as if to prove Baz right, the language mod

Awake

I was biking the trail today at dark and I totally bit the dirt. There was a guy in one of those sort of really low, three wheeled numbers and he was rollling along in the dark, it was like 9 o clock or so. I'd done pretty much a sprint at that point except for the run, its about 12 miles out to the pool then I did an hour in the pool. So I was tired. Well the guy is a shape in the dark in front of me, and I'm moving behind him so I say "on your left" and he is startled. He veers left I avoid him and decide to ride on the side of the trail. Big mistake for a roadbike. Front wheel gets caught, flipped and the innertube pops. I'm thrown right sliding the bike against the torque and my arm hits the pavement as the slide ends. Big cut. Its pitch black and I'm collecting myself. I call out "I'm ok" but the other rider is long gone. So I can't change the tire. Its blown, my kit is under the seat but its very dark. And I dont have any ru

Stories told through color

Horses are the ultimate prey animals, and have been called man's best slave. They show up squarely on the list of every predator, as a sort of food group - right up there with prairie dogs, and bunny rabbits. If one is weak, they abandon it to save the herd. The alpha mare is a vicious creature that kicks and bites her subjects into submission. I once saw an inch deep hoof gash. We are kind to them by comparison, which is why they abide a 200 pound rider upon them. A week ago or so I saw a horse, a small foal. He had just got out of supertox and was lying there on the floor of his stable next to his mother. He was solid white with a deep blue stain on his back leg. That was what had hurt him. Just one wound. The young foal had suffered a gash in his back hindquarters from where the cowboy drained an absces; slashing the horse open with a buck- knife .. In our Georgia weather the infection spread like unsolicited email to someone signed up to hippie pay. Somehow, he made it o

Le Temp Detruit Tout

Dans le cine "irreversible", il est une message subliminal qui dite "temp detruit tout". C'est un bon film, certainnement, mais le phrase c' n'est pas correct. Le temp c'est simple - c'est un dimension. L'autre d'espace-temps. L'homme detruit tout. Ne c'est pas?

The rules are simple, we start with definitions. Fuck here means just what you think it means. But it also means something else. Because the context is the fuck of my entire life . And that means we go to the ++atomic++ level with this. Since very ancient times , people have asked questions about the nature of the world and the position of man in creation. They considered matter as composed of atoms, cells constituted by energetic elements, organized according to mathematical formulas that define the various elements under relatively stable and permanent forms. Life was based on code, that existed, only temporarily - much like all your old code on your old floppy disks. The mediums change. The code adapts. Once code is transmitted , ie. DNA, in the process of transcription , itself is destroyed. Sometimes the purpose is to destroy the cell with programmed death. Other times to create new capabilities, or organize cells. Still others provide us with neat little Turners runing
