These White Lights Will Bend to Make Blue

I awoke
to the sound of "You've Got Two Eyes"
by Gloria Chang

Sweet submission
The first time I set the alarm
in over four years
Its morning pain cutting through me
to the sound of the piano
I dreamed of my daughter playing the cello
behind two eyes silver, lidless and cold
How many times have I wanted eyes as dead as these?
hearing her cello thread through the dark
no pupils no retina
I could be pissing myself behind these things
And no one would know
duct tape is silver
silence is gold

Drive away
Just get on the Interstate
and slip through this closing gate
Pulled into this cheap hotel
I called just to wish you well
They said don't let love break down and just show me how
And let me never
be broken..

I open my lidless eyes and see the pattern
of wood
And expensive
Empty bed
I slept so well
and woke with the sun still dark
to meet the day with teeth bared
Because of you
something in us changed
the lies I told
weigh upon me like chains
that I break with bare hand
To reach for you
to hold your mane
to ride you
a touch of the whip
and you're off
in my mouth of silver and gunmetal
the comfortable feel of your rein
and your leg
and you
To ride so fast
these white lights will bend to make blue
